ANGULAR STYLE - Interview with Cobom

Do you consider yourself more an illustrator or graphic designer?

I am working as an illustrator and also doing package design that utilizes illustrations.

What are your first memories of illustrating and/or designing?

Since I was young, I loved to draw and watch Disney animation that airs on television every weekend morning. I began to draw by copying animations.

We love your unique, angular style! What influenced your style and how has it changed, or progressed, since you began illustrating / designing?

Thank you for highly regarding my illustrations. Before I worked as a freelancer illustrator, I worked as a package designer in a cosmetics company. I designed as the clients wished so, illustrations and package designs which were trendy, cute and something catchy to the consumers at the same time. Although working for the consumers’ tastes was also interesting, I yearned to find my own colors more. I used to draw round and kind-looking illustrations, but in order to be more creative, my illustrations look like how they seem now, upward eyelines and more square-looking. I prefer this better.

What triggers your creativity?

I love to watch various music videos, beauty and film skills, and also street fashion pictures.

If you could collaborate with ANY artist, who would it be?

I have never had chances for collaboration, but if there are any, I would like to work with someone in film area.

How do you stay motivated to create?

When I see someone stylish in a way that I prefer, while walking down the road or just travelling, I remember their images and draw them in my own way again. Other than that, I get my inspirations from diverse pictures in Pinterest or Tumblr.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not illustrating?

I love spending time with my family, even when they think I’m tremendously irritating. I also love getting outside and doing sweet parkour moves. I actually suck at the “sweet” part of that last sentence, but I dig jumping over things, rolling under stuff and climbing. I was an extremely furry baby. I might be the missing link.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not illustrating or designing?

I spend most of my time finding references, sketching, and coloring. In spare time, I take a walk in the park or the streets for an hour or two to stay fit.

What are your illustration goals for 2018?

My current goal is to successfully participate in ‘2018 Seoul Illustration Fair’ that is held in late July of this year. I aim to work hard on my illustrations and create products to show at the fair.

What is your favorite song, artist or band you enjoy listening to while you work??

I enjoy listening to pop songs and K-pop music while drawing. Although I try to listen to various genres randomly, my favorites are Camila Cabello and Sigrid. The unique groovy styles and melody give off great inspirations to make my illustrations more creative.
