ENERGETIC PASTEL COLORS & UNIVERSAL BLESSINGS - Interview with Violeta Jane

Hello! My name is Violeta Jane and I’m a graphic designer, illustrator and freelance artist from Colombia.

Can you tell us a little bit about your illustrations?

As long as I could remember, I loved to draw and paint. My room was a sacred place, my mother always let me paint the walls, the door, the mirror… I like to communicate who I am, what I see and how I see it. I have an eager imagination and I pour as much creativity into each job, as possible. I love working on projects, managing different concepts, expressing complex ideas, as well as simpler ones.

Can you describe your style to us?

Most of my style has a personal component. I love playing with details, figures, and colors. When I start an illustration, I like to think that the characters or the theme lives in a magical world. I don’t think too much about what I do, I just breathe and I live it; in a set of elements, charged atmospheres, dedication, mystery — I like to give a kind of dark glow to my illustrations.

What gets you excited about illustrating?

I think that illustration offers the opportunity to experiment with your imagination. Every time I finish a new illustration, I am very excited. My work is very detailed. I express myself fundamentally through my illustrations, and it is a bonus that other people enjoy with the way in which feelings and ideas interact in it.

How do you come up with new ideas? What is your process?

My work may be an ironic vision, or a feeling of the moment, or the imagination in detail. Like, I was just with a friend, I split a nail, we get a joke from that — and BOOM! An idea, which I imagine, and I'm illustrating. I am patient when I illustrate, I try to enjoy each stroke. The atmosphere and the environment are very important to create, sometimes just a song can give me many ideas. I am very emotional and I get carried away by small things that I consider very important.

What’s one thing about your artwork that you’ve learned about yourself?

Dedication.

Do you ever have days where you don’t want to be creative and draw at all? How do you stay motivated?

I keep motivated by designing and illustrating, I think it's my therapy.

Would you say your personality reflects your art?

Completely. I express myself fundamentally through my illustrations and my designs they're an aside from what I am.

Is there a different style you want to explore?

Of course. I like that my environments in my work reflects through my imagination and creativity. I try new things, different techniques — and for me, illustration means discovering something new every day. I am currently playing with typography, color palettes and shapes.

What is your favorite song, artist or band to listen to while you illustrate?

I like to discover new music, new sounds. Right now, I really like the last “Residente” album. As I have grown and expanded my musical taste, I find it lovely to design with themes that you just let in the player regardless of what it is. Universal blessings and love
