LUST IS INSIDE US AND SOME PEOPLE FEEL SHY TO TELL - Interview with Bernice Sio

My name is Bernice. I am a graphic designer based in Macau. I Love photography and illustration. I love to sleep because I can see the interesting world from my dreams. The face, the scenes and the music that I have never seen and never heard in the reality.

How did your journey as an illustrator begin? How early did you know you wanted to be an illustrator?

Two years ago, I broke up with my boyfriend and I felt anxious and depressed at that time. Then I started to illustration to release my feelings. That’s why I put grey color in my art in the beginning. And I found my way out by illustration finally. Now, you can see more color in my art. I love illustration day by day and I know I wanted to be an illustrator since I got away from anxiety.

Can you describe your style to us?

I love Chinese tradition patten. I put little Chinese tradition elements into the sexual pictures in my mind. Also, cloud is the main element in my art. Cloud is changeable. People can imagine anyone and anything in my art. Same scenes, but difference face. That’s how my art comes out.

Your work is very sexual, is there a reason behind this? What kind of feelings do you hope to evoke from people who look at your art?

To me, sexual is beautiful; it is about our lust. Lust is inside us and some people feel shy to tell. Sexuality is a part of our life; like foods and drinks. It fills our lust. Not embarrassed and no reason to hide. It is interesting, lust can make you feel like up to heaven, it can make you down to hell also. Maybe heaven and hell is just the same place.

What do you love most about illustrating?

I love illustrating, because it makes me release.

What’s one thing about your artwork that you’ve learned about yourself?

I learned more about myself when I throwback my artworks. I know how I love and how I live from my artworks.

What is art in your opinion?

To me, art is like a language. It connects people. People can know and feel more about the creator by reading artworks. If you can “read” the work, that mean you guys are in the same language. And there are unlimited languages in the art world. Just like this interview. It connects me and PICKCHUR Magazine, you know my language.

If you could illustrate a movie poster for ANY movie, what movie would it be? Why?

I would like to illustrate a poster for “ Cloud Atlas”. I love the message from this movie: “Our lives are not our own. We are bound to others, past and present, and by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.” Art is the same, bound to others. The art work from past and present, it effects our future. Not only the artwork, it contains the process of creating art. The process including the one who you love and the one you hate, the things which you love and you and you hate. Of course, lust also.

How do you get yourself out of a creative funk?

Just do it. Once you did, you will know the way. It's sounds wired, but true.

Is there a different style you want to explore in your art? Why or why not?

Now, I don’t want to explore other style. I just want to improve my existing style.

What is your favorite song, artist or band you enjoy listening to while you work?

My favorite song is “Out of the woods” , the piano version at GRAMMY Museum by Taylor Swift. The second one is “ Lust for life” by Lana Del Rey. I love to listen the songs by Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Russian Red, Moby and Supper Moment ( A band from Hong Kong) while I work
